Isle of Man electric railways

Not a metro. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, not part of the United Kingdom, so strictly these fall outside this site. They are included because they are the most complete surviving Victorian electric railway network in the British Isles and visitors routinely look for them here.

The island runs a network no longer found anywhere else: an 1893 interurban electric railway from Douglas to Ramsey, an 1895 electric mountain railway to the summit of Snaefell, a steam railway to Port Erin, and a horse-drawn tramway along Douglas promenade that has been running since 1876. All four are operated by the government as public transport, not as a museum.

Worth knowing

  1. Buy a Go Explore card rather than individual fares. Two journeys nearly cover the day rate.
  2. The steam railway, the electric railway and the horse trams all have different seasons; the electric railway runs longest.
  3. During TT race fortnight in late May and early June the island is extremely busy and road closures affect connections.
